Caution

The 1952 edition of Lal Kitab starts with a couple of warnings which I wish to share with the readers.

What follows below (in italics) is my translation of the original text.

A deep study of the subject or the faculty of intuition may enable you (the astrologer) to know about the time of death (of someone) or the gender of the unborn baby, but it is forbidden to forecast on such subjects.

Lal Kitab warns the astrologer of the terrible consequences (which may befall him/her) should he/she ignore this warning.
All Lal Kitab Practitioners see this warning as a Lakshman Rekha which should not be crossed.

The astrologer should suggest all possible precautions if there are any indicators in the natal/annual/transit chart but should be careful with his words.

For example:

An astrologer should say something like this

You should be careful while driving or there is an indication of drug abuse in your chart and you should be careful as it may affect your health.

It is not about “can such things be predicted?”
It is about “should such things be predicted?”

According to Lal Kitab ethics:- no, such things should never be predicted.

The Government of India banned Prenatal sex determination in 1994. The objective was to prevent sex selective abortion. In a nation where female foeticide still occurs, such a legistlation is required.

In 1952, the author of Lal Kitab Pt Rup Chand Joshi cautioned astrologers against predicting the gender of the unborn child.

Allow me to write about a recent trend too (which I do not agree with)

Many parents are planning their Child’s delivery date on the advice of astrologers.  Again parents should only consult with the specialist doctors on such issues.

I am sure the author of Lal Kitab would have cautioned astrologers on this trend had it been prevalent in his time.

On Gemstones

A few disclaimers first:-

I do not suggest gemstones as a remedial measure.

I do not wear any gemstones.

The following is my personal opinion and it is not my intention to question the astrologers who prescribe gemstones.

There are astrologers who vouch for the efficacy of gemstones. There are also some astrologers who never prescribe gemstones.

I do not have a problem with gemstones. I do however have a problem with the way they are marketed. In my opinion, the benefits of gemstones (as a remedial measure in astrology) are greatly exaggerated.

As far as Lal Kitab Astrology is concerned, it is not a great fan of gemstones. There are many instances in Lal Kitab where use of metals is suggested. For example, use of silver to strengthen Moon. In very few cases use of semi precious/non precious stones is mentioned. Lal Kitab Astrology places more importance on Karma. The author of Lal Kitab has used Karma (in thought, speech and action) to suggest remedial measures which may benefit the native, his/her family and society.

It is amusing to see “experts” recommending gemstones for all sorts of afflictions/problems. I wonder, why did Shri Krishna bother with 700 odd verses in the Gita. He could have given a pearl to Arjuna (to clear Ajuna’s mental restlessness and asked him to get on with the war.)

There are no shortcuts in Life and there are no shortcuts to Karma.

The following will illustrate my thoughts on the subject-

K is a married man and has recently got his horoscope  analysed.  He has been asked to strengthen Venus. K is not short of money.

Scenario 1:- This is what most astrologers today (most astrologers in India anyway) are likely to recommend.

Wear a diamond ring.

Some astrologer/s in this case would even offer to procure the ring for K or might recommended a couple of jewelers to K. The astrologer/s is looking to get a commission from K’s purchase.

Scenario 2:- This is what any honest Vedic/Western/Lal Kitab astrologer will recommend.

Take a family vacation, respect your wife, buy her gifts etc.

The astrologer/s in this case will never suggest which airline/travel agent to use or what gift to buy.

Of course if K could afford, he could do both (buy the ring and go on a vacation), and that should be his choice. But if K were under financial constraints and had to chose one of the options, then Lal Kitab astrology will always prefer/recommend the second option. Appreciating small things that give you and your spouse/partner happiness are more likely to improve the positive effects of Venus.

The following quote is apt in this context.

Enjoy the little things, for one day you may look back and realize they were the big things.”

Bill Clinton: – Birth Chart Analysis

For interpretation of Mars and Venus in Mr Clinton’s Birth chart please refer to my earlier post.

Let us take a look at some of the other planets in Mr Clinton’s Natal Chart with respect to Lal Kitab Astrology.

In this post I will also explain a few concepts of Lal Kitab Astrology namely Takraav (Colliding Planets) and Qurbaani ke Grah (Scapegoat planets). These concepts are often misunderstood.

In Lal Kitab Astrology planets are also indicator of family members. For example Jupiter represents Grand Father and Father, Sun represents Father, Moon represents Mother, Venus represents Spouse, Mars represents Brothers etc.

There is also a concept of friendly and enemy planets. For example Moon is on friendly terms with Jupiter, Sun and Moon.

Takraav (Colliding Planets)

Planets in 1st house will strike and to some extent destroy the planet in 8th house (friend or foe). Besides 1-8, a few other placements are seen as Takraav and I will mention them in other posts.

Qurbaani Ke Grah (Scapegoat Planets)

Whenever a planet is afflicted it will seek some other planet (as scapegoat) to pass some/all  of its affliction. For example an afflicted moon will pass on its troubles to Sun, Jupiter and Mars.

Mr Bill Clinton

Mr Bill Clinton

In Mr Clinton’s natal chart Moon is in Takraav (8th from Mars and Venus).  Moon is afflicted and will seek the help of its friends Mars, Jupiter and Sun to share this affliction.

As mentioned above Moon represents Mother, Jupiter and Sun Represent Father and Mars represents Brothers in Lal Kitab Astrology.

Three months before Mr Clinton was born, his father died tragically in a car accident.

In the above chart Moon is afflicted (Widowed Mother).  Jupiter is the scapegoat planet (early death of Father).

Such tragic events happened even before the birth of the native. Such events in Lal Kitab terminology will be termed as Grah Phal (Fate) as the native had no control over them.

Mars in first house is very auspicious. It helps the native develop a healthy ego (required for worldly success).

Venus in the first house is capable of giving the native a highly prestigious governmental/administrative post. On the negative side, this placement of Venus may cause some scandal.

Detailed interpretation of Mars and Venus in Mr Clinton’s chart can be found in my earlier post.

Notice the presence of North Node (Rahu) in 9th house . In lal Kitab 9th house is the house of Jupiter. In this chart Rahu is in Takraav from Jupiter. The native could face accusations of or could be a victim of fraud. Due care should be exercised to ensure transparency in all financial activities.

Saturn in 10th and 11th house is said to be in its own house in Lal Kitab Astrology. 11th Saturn has been called in Lal Kitab as architect of fate. There is a lot of scope to exercise free will and achieve success with this placement of Saturn.

Mercury in 11th house is with a friendly planet Saturn. According to Lal Kitab the native with Mercury in 11th house should be extra careful between the ages of 32 and 34. This Mercury and North Node in 9th house require that the native be very careful and transparent in all his financial dealings. Whitewater controversy surfaced around this time. However no indictments were ever made against the Clintons

I quote the following from Wikipedia to get an idea about the political contributions of Mr Clinton just after his age of 34 as 11th Mercury generally gives very good results after the age of 34.

In the early 1980s, Clinton made reform of the Arkansas education system a top priority. The Arkansas Education Standards Committee, chaired by Clinton’s wife, attorney and Legal Services Corporation chair Hillary Rodham Clinton, succeeded in reforming the education system, transforming it from the worst in the nation into one of the best. Many have considered this the greatest achievement of the Clinton governorship.

Notice the emphasis on education.

Interest in music and communications (Mercury), Law and Justice (Saturn) is verified by life events.

Success in politics came largely due to Mars in 1st house (Sword of Justice in Lal Kitab), and Saturn in 11th house.

Auspicious Saturn in Lal Kitab has been called as Kalam Vidhaata (blessing of God, writer of destiny). If Saturn is benevolent in a chart then aspirations of the native will fructify. Saturn provides the native with the wisdom to choose the right course of action and the perseverance to stick to that course of action.

Generally Moon in 8th is not considered good for education but in this chart Saturn and Mercury in 11th,  Mars in 1st and Jupiter in 2nd house is very good for academic pursuits.

Mr Clinton’s chart is very interesting to me because despite a difficult childhood (Fate) he went on to become the elected Head of State of his country (Fate? maybe, Free will? definitely). His horoscope indicates both; fate (circumstances over which he had no/little control) and free will (choosing the right career for instance.)

Prayers

Blasts: Boston, Bangalore

Earthquake: Iran, Pakistan, India

Please take a moment of your time to pray for the victims and their families.

The latter is an act of God. The former is clearly not and those responsible must be punished to the fullest extent of law.  I do not have one iota of sympathy for those who target innocent civilians.

Some Questions on Kaal Sarp Dosha

Former UK Prime Minister, Baroness Margaret Thatcher, died yesterday at the age of 87. My sincerest condolences to her family and friends.

The subject of today’s post is Kaal Sarp Dosha(KSD). The following questions(in bold italics) were asked  by a friend.

What is Kaal Sarp Dosha?

When in a Horoscope, all the seven planets namely Sun, Moon, Jupiter, Venus, Mars, Mercury and Saturn are placed on one side of the nodal axis ( ascending lunar node  Rahu and descending lunar node Ketu), then Kaal Sarp Dosha or Kaal Sarp Yoga is said to be formed in that Horoscope.

So, is it a yoga (good placement) or dosha (bad placement)?

  1. Either
  2. Neither

Please clarify?

Well, that depends on whether you believe in KSD as a valid astrological concept.

Are there reasons to doubt its validity?

There is no mention about such a yoga(or dosha)  in classical books of Vedic Astrology, Lal Kitab Astrology or Western Astrology.

I came across a Lal Kitab Astrologer who kept referring to KSD in my chart .

Please ask him/her if KSD is mentioned in any of the original editions of Lal Kitab.

If Astrology is to evolve then it will have to accept new concepts.

Yes, so long as such concepts contribute to astrology and are not merely used to make money out of gullible or unsuspecting clients.

Does KSY/KSD not contribute anything to astrology?

In my humble opinion concentration of planets in houses must be assessed with great scrutiny irrespective of the fact that the planets are within the nodal axis or outside the nodal axis. The problem with KSD is that it is mainly used to scare people. Those (astrologers) who use KSD to scare people and suggest expensive remedies do a great disservice to the serious study of astrology.

Can you give examples of any celebrities with KSD combination in their Birth Chart?

I will mention three individuals who have risen to the top of their chosen field of endeavor.

Please note: The charts displayed below are solar charts (a ‘horoscope’ in which the Sun is placed in the first house, i.e. birth time has been set close to sunrise as the actual time of birth is/maybe unknown). The so called “ KSD”  was operative all day on the dates mentioned below.

1. Baroness Thatcher

Former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom

Born: October 13, 1925

outmarthat

2. Mr Sanjeev Kapoor

Indian chef and entrepreneur

Born: April 10, 1964

outsankap

3. Mr Sachin Tendulkar

Indian Cricketer

Born:  April 24, 1973

outsachten

Just to give you an example: Everyone born between April 24 1973 and May 6 1973 would have this so called KSD in their Birth Chart.

Kaal Means time, it also means death. Sarp means snake. It seems every imaginable problem has been attributed to KSD. Surely they should tone it down a bit. Why do astrologers use so much fear?

Fear Sells

So does hope, of course it is up to us what we chose

Of course, but don’t go overboard with hope either. False hope sells too, but I’ll leave that for another day.

Holi

Here’s wishing all the readers a happy, joyous and colourful Holi !

It is celebrated on the full moon day of the Phalguna month, approximately a fortnight after Maha-Shivratri.

Holi – The Festival of Colours – is celebrated with much zest and fervour. The Colours highlight the bounties of Spring. This festival may have originally started as a harvest festival. There is much evidence to support this claim.

Traditionally farmers offered the first crop to Agni (Fire God). A bonfire is lit up. This can be seen as a symbolic way of marking the end of winter (harsh times, past) and onset of spring (hope, future).

There are many legends associated with Holi. All of them are about : victory of good over evil, love, fraternity, gratitude,  a sense of joy etc.

The colours used in the past were all herbal. Nowadays there are cheap synthetic colours which cater to the market. One must be careful while using these.

A very famous Hindi Film Song goes like this

“Holi Ke Din Dil Khil Jaate Hain Rangon Men Rang Mil Jaate Hain
Gile Shiqave Bhuul Ke Dosto Dushman Bhi Gale Mil Jaate Hain”

On the day of Holi, Heart is filled with joy. When the colours mix, even foes forgetting all feuds become friends.

Great lyrics penned by the the late Anand Bakshiji.

One must however be considerate in celebrations. Some people tend to push the limits and that is when the problems begin.

Some precautions on Holi

1. If possible use Organic Colours

2. Synthetic colours may be quite damaging to the hair and may cause irritation in the eyes, be careful in using them.

3. Respect the personal space of others.

4. Do not waste too much water, dry organic colours are a lot more fun.

5. Do not drink and drive. Holi is also the time when the rate of accidents increase across the country.

Symbolic significance of Holi: Let bygones be bygones
